Forget Napa! Spain is making so many exciting Cabernet Sauvignon's, the trend has spread to Navarra, where the variety is capturing the distinctive character of the region’s terroir. The Reino de Altuzarra Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from “Ribera Alta” & “Baja Montaña” with different climatic influences, both bordering the most famous region in all of Spain - Rioja! Traditionally, Navarra has been strongly associated with Garnacha, but a new generation of winemakers are motivated to show how Cabernet Sauvignon has adapted to the terrior of the vineyards, some which date back to the 14th century. The moderate, coastal climate keeps the alcohol in check (13.5%) but this is still an explosive red with huge aromas of black cherries, wild berry fruits and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and expansive on the palate, the oak is neutral, which allows the fruit and tannins to really shine. An incredible value under $12, don't miss one of the top reds of the year!
"Deep violet to the eye, this wine offers a nose of cherry, purple fig and saddle leather. Bright at first sip, it has flavors of pomegranate and raspberry. Slightly hefty tannins settle into the palate, with notes of milk chocolate, cherry pipe tobacco and black-olive paste. Bright fruit remains at the forefront, lingering in the mouth."
